The authentic Allgäu
Travel region
Germany
Duration and distance
7 days / 210 kilometer
In preparation for your upcoming cycling holiday in 2023, we present to you a picturesque landscape of vivid green meadows, merry cow herds with their jingling bells, delightful small towns, and baroque monasteries and churches that have upheld their tradition. Alongside, you'll experience genuine hospitality wherever you go. This is a place where the sun sets the pace, each kilometre bringing forth fresh impressions and a sense of liberation for the mind. Everywhere we feel the attachment of the inhabitants to this Allgäu, to their Allgäu. We meet the people who cultivate their customs with great skill: the Gmeiner family at the alpine cheese dairy, the liqueur producer Michael Schmidt or Josef Wagner, the alphorn maker.
Travel informations
Day 1: Arrival and Memmingen
Later in the day, we meet in Memmingen, a town that combines Swabian and Bavarian cultures. Our itinerary includes exploring the historic old town, strolling through a city with an almost Mediterranean allure, starting from the Frauenkirche and walking along the stream towards the Kuhberg, passing the city gate, and reaching the Rathausmarkt, where we'll discover 850 years of history. We'll unwind and embrace the ambiance of this unique region before savouring our first authentic dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Ottobeuren and farming traditions - approx. 52 km
We will be transported via bus to the Benedictine abbey of Ottobeuren, where we'll receive a guided tour of the "Swabian Escorial" and its basilica, which boasts a 13th-century Roman crucifix. Following the tour, we will retrieve our bicycles and cycle through the hilly terrain of Unterallgäu towards Illerbeuren. A tranquil spot on the banks of the Iller will provide the perfect location for our picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we'll cycle on a scenic route to Bad Wurzach in the Acht valley. Our gentle day concludes as we arrive at our hotel.
Day 3: Bog and lake bathing - approx. 32 km
After breakfast, we will discover the biotope of the Wurzacher Ried, a protected peat bog with 800 plant species and more than 1,500 animal species. After a refreshing break, we pedal happily through fields and meadows towards the Holzmühle lake, where we take time for a swim and a picnic. In the afternoon, we continued cycling to Kißlegg, where we were greeted by the Hofgut Farny, an elegant spa hotel situated amidst the rural landscape. After a well-deserved break in the wellness area, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the brewery..
Day 4: Wangen and Alpine plants - approx. 41 km
After about seven kilometers on quiet paths, Wangen with its beautiful old town with patrician houses and colourful craftsmen's shops appears in the hills of the western Allgäu. After a little refreshment, the tour continues gently through the green Allgäu. On the way, the small town of Eglof invites you to take a snack break. Our destination for the day is Oberstaufen, where we will be meeting Michael Schmidt for a unique walking experience. As a skilled brandy distiller, he will guide us along the way and introduce us to the herbs and plants that he uses to craft his delectable liqueurs. We even have the opportunity to sample them! Afterwards, we will take a taxi to the Königshof hotel.
Day 5: Alpine panorama and alphorns - approx. 42 km
Today, we're in for some exceptional moments. We'll start by taking a gondola ride up to Imbergalp and then proceed on foot to meet the Gmeiner family, who carry out the age-old tradition of cheese-making. Our visit will include a tour of the cheese factory, followed by a tasting session and a delightful picnic on the farm, set amidst a stunning panorama of the Hochgrat, Grünten, and Nebelhorn. We'll then make a detour to Weißach to visit the Wagner family. They have been making alphorns for more than 50 years and show us some of the techniques of this ancient art. Afterwards, the path leads us into the Ostrach valley. At the top of the valley, we arrive at our hotel in Oberjoch, offering breathtaking views of the high Alps.
Day 6: Honey and beer - approx. 43 km
In the morning, we enjoy a beautiful bike ride down to Bad Hindelang, then cross two idyllic valleys to discover the Jörg family's apiaries and the secrets of beekeeping. By afternoon, we will arrive at the banks of the Grüntensee, and ultimately reach Nesselwang. At this point, we will make a stop at the Post inn, where we will take a tour of the quaint microbrewery before indulging in our last supper of delicious Allgäu cuisine accompanied by locally brewed beer. Following this, we will board the bus and make our way back to Oberjoch, where we will conclude the evening and our vacation with a breathtaking view.
Day 7: Departure or individual extension
Following breakfast, it's time to bid farewell to the alpine pastures, the charming sound of the bells, and the warm hospitality. For those who wish to prolong their stay independently, we are always ready to provide advice and support.
